Ensuring Swift Transportation for Students with Disabilities
Uwezo Youth Empowerment is actively supporting Rwanda’s program to ensure safe and exclusive transportation for students traveling to and from school. At Pele Stadium in Nyamirambo, where all transport logistics are coordinated, Uwezo works tirelessly to assist students with disabilities, ensuring they travel comfortably and on time. Our focus is on making transportation accessible, particularly for secondary school students with visual and hearing impairments, who often face more delays than others. Thanks to our team’s knowledge of sign language, we serve as mediators, bridging the communication gap and ensuring these students receive the assistance they need to travel swiftly and with ease. This initiative highlights Uwezo’s dedication to empowering students with disabilities, removing barriers to education, and fostering inclusion. By ensuring accessible transportation, we’re helping students focus on learning and building a brighter future.

Meet John Doe. He often faces the delay, as his wheel chair is rigid-frame i.e non-foldable.
and it’s size doesn’t fit most of the cars in the stadium.
hence Reasonable accomodation was arranged with collaboration of the transport facilities and NESSA.

This is a student with a disability who depends on a wheelchair for mobility but doesn’t have one. While at Pele Stadium, where students were being organized to board buses for school, our team had to step in and physically carry him to ensure he could make it to the bus on time. This moment highlights the critical need for assistive devices like wheelchairs to ensure students with disabilities can access education without unnecessary challenges.
