About the Program

Historically, children with disabilities had no opportunity to participate in children’s platforms or networks at different levels such as schools and communities. This prevented them from expressing their ideas or exploring their potential to enjoy their rights as other children without disabilities. Missing out on existing platforms, the voices of children with disabilities were not heard, and their issues and challenges were not resolved.

UWEZO has made significant efforts to promote the voices of children with disabilities via SERUKA MWANA. SERUKA is a Kinyarwanda word meaning showcasing, being ready to demonstrate physical, mental, and intellectual smartness, while MWANA means child. SERUKA MWANA is a platform designed to empower children with disabilities on child and disability rights, explore their talents, engage in community activities, identify and advocate for issues/challenges hindering their rights, and hold duty bearers accountable.

The initiative has led to overcoming various obstacles for children with disabilities, including making school buildings accessible and creating an inclusive environment for students to express their views. As a result, districts have taken into account the issues raised by SERUKA MWANA to adjust their programs accordingly.
